It wasn’t a single thing. I worked with a talented PM that took the time to explain a lot of the theory behind his work, how he reached conclusions based on data, etc. That actually made sense, since we can now quantify these elusive “product decisions”. He gave me a huge list of reading material, most of it on medium, which were intended for people who want to be PMs. Also, the fact that many algorithms did not reach production, others that were deployed were not used by clients. To summarize, it just made sense to see the product as a real-life research project and that connected to the things I understand from academic research. The goal is not guaranteed, you can just manage the process to reach it.
